Transportation is more than being able to travel from point A to point B. It involves a comprehensive planning process. Transportation Planning includes important components such as alternative modes of transportation, improvements to current roadways, and bicycle and pedestrian facilities. But most importantly, it involves the public.

Vision
The Flagstaff Metropolitan Planning Organization (FMPO) creates a stakeholder-driven transportation vision and aggressively advances the plans and projects that fulfill that vision. The FMPO carries out planning, coordination, and integration of activities necessary to maintain a comprehensive, cooperative, and continuing multi-agency transportation planning program. The fundamental concept of the FMPO is "Partners in Transportation Enhancing Our Community."

Jurisdictions and Funds
Jurisdictions that make up the FMPO include the City of Flagstaff, Coconino County, and the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). The FMPO receives funding from federal, state and local governments and oversees the expenditure of federal transit funds working closely with the state and municipalities that make up northern Arizona.

Each year, the MPO evaluates and approves proposed surface transportation improvement projects, while providing a forum for interagency cooperation and public input into transportation funding and prioritized decision.

FMPO's Role
Innovative communication and solutions define the FMPO as the leader for coordinating regional transportation and land use planning. Intellectual and professional integrity keep us there. Every trip confirms our character. The FMPO is dedicated to exercising leadership and initiative in planning and assisting development of efficient, integrated transportation system facilities in the Flagstaff area.

As Flagstaff continues to experience growth, the FMPO plays a critical role in the community as the Executive Board that empowers interested persons to speak in a unified manner to their state and federal legislators about transportation needs and concerns.
