What is the Diversity Awareness Commission:
We are citizen volunteers, who applied for and was appointed by the Mayor to serve a three year term on this commission.
The Diversity Awareness Commission is committed to fostering mutual understanding, tolerance, awareness, and respect among all the citizens of Flagstaff.
Mission Statement: The Diversity Awareness Commission improves the communications and sensitivity among the peoples of our community. We are the example of proactive leadership and a community resource on issues of diversity, providing the information and advocacy that brings sensitivity through understanding.
Vision: The Commission is a leader resource in the community and to the City of Flagstaff Council on issues of diversity. The Commission emphasizes advocacy, harmony, respect and cooperation in all relationships and community involvement at all levels.
Purpose of the Public Forums: To obtain input from the public concerning the proposed ordinance proposed by Equality Arizona, an advocate for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community. The proposed Ordnance would prohibit discrimination in the City of Flagstaff in employment, housing, public accommodations and education based on age, race, color, creed, religion, national origin, ancestry, disability, marital status, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or physical characteristic. In other words, it would add sexual orientation and gender identity as a protected class in the City of Flagstaff.
Some of the other items DAC has been a part of is the Race Equality Week, Calling all Colors and the recent breakfast hosting Rose Diaz as the speaker.
